LUMEN PRINTING WORKSHOP

with Rachelle Bussières

  • Starts Jul 9
  • 300 US dollars
  • West 40th Street

Class Description

Lumen prints are a camera-less gelatin silver paper exposed to light and put directly in the fix. There are no other photographic chemicals involved. Historically, lumen prints have been used to record organic materials such as botanics. There is not a lot of literature on lumen printing to this day which makes it a very exciting and mysterious photographic process! Through an exploration of the lumen print process, students will experiment with different techniques and develop an understanding of the factors that influence the colors on gelatin silver prints – light, sun, time, and paper. Everyone is invited to bring materials to make photograms and/or contact prints using a digital negative. Each print takes from 5 minutes to a few hours to make: be prepared to make a lot of prints! Instructor Bio: Rachelle Bussières (Quebec City, Canada) received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2015. She now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Addressing the impact of light on our psyche, environment and social structure, Rachelle Bussières’ work is at the intersection of photography and sculpture, moving through a collision of materials and documents using the lumen photographic process. She has had recent solo exhibitions at Melanie Flood Projects (Portland, USA), Penumbra Foundation (NYC, USA), Johansson Projects (Oakland, USA) and Robert Koch Gallery (San Francisco, USA). Awards include the Penumbra Foundation. Tuition: $250 + $50 Material Fee Members get 10% Use code MEMBER10
