Printmaking over the past 100 years has seen an explosion of creativity and innovation unparalleled throughout the history of print. From the WPA era to Atelier 17 and the Printmaking Workshop;, Gemini G.E.L. & ULAE to the resurgence of printmaking in the early 21st century. There are more prints, printmakers, printers, and publishers than there is time to explore, but we will do our best to open the world of printmaking as far and wide as possible, and include as many voices, perspectives, processes, and techniques as we can fit into four, two- hour classes. We will cover the techniques employed, context for the work, and the intentions of the artists. The goal of this class is to inform, inspire, and encourage inquiry through prints. Instructor Bio: Phil Sanders is a leading master printer based in Asheville, North Carolina with over twenty years of experience lecturing, educating, and advocating for prints and their makers. He has collaborated with celebrated artists on prints housed in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Library of Congress, among many other institutions. Sanders recently completed writing and researching Prints and Their Makers, a 320- page overview of the history of printmaking and a behind the scenes glimpse into the fascinating world of contemporary collaborative printmaking.
