Carve away! Hanga is based on over 500 years of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. This course will present aspects of designing and printing with a water-based approach. Participants will learn proper care and handling of carving tools, planning and transferring your design to the blocks, registration, types of wood and inks, gradation effects bokashi, and the use of the baren as the printing press. The goal is to complete an edition of 8 to 10 prints in several colors. Each session will evolve a new level of tool use and printing control with a focus on the Japanese techniques, specifically the use of the baren and kento registration and how to keep your tools sharp.
