Burin engraving on copper provides the skilled practitioner with a linear vocabulary of great range, clarity, and dynamic intensity. Over the course of four class sessions, students will be taught the cutting and sharpening techniques necessary to produce a simple engraving. Particular emphasis will be placed on formal exercises in tool handling, drawing strategies in building an image, and tool maintenance. Other topics to be covered will include plate preparation, image transfer and layout, plate correction, and effective wiping techniques. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of open studio time to practice between sessions.
