In this class, plates you have already made (copper, woodblock, collagraph, solar plate, etc.) will be printed on thin Japanese papers to make translucent prints. There will be lots of experimentation in the printing process, such as printing repeats, ghosts and layering and combining prints from multiple plates. We will also draw, cut, collage and gold leaf to make unique and complex mixed media pieces. Students are encouraged to bring existing prints that can be reworked. Basic composition principles and several gluing techniques will be taught. These include gluing with traditional Japanese Nori rice paste and Gudy, a newer dry ‘sheet’ glue. The idea is to use the flexibility of the print medium to stretch the imagination by using any one or more of these techniques. This class is for experienced printmakers. You will be required to bring in at least one finished plate to work with.
