Workshop description:

Photogravure enables the artist to etch a photographic image onto a copper plate and print it with remarkable subtlety and nuance. You will learn the Carl Kliç / Fox Talbot method of copperplate photogravure as it was used by Alfred Stieglitz in “Camera Work” and Edward S. Curtis in “The North American Indian”.  The workshop is structured to give participants a hands-on, detailed step-by-step experience of the process. You will complete one photogravure plate and several prints under close supervision of our experienced instructor.  In this workshop, it is possible to work from an original negative or a drawing on frosted mylar only (no digital printing is available); however, time will allow only one of the methods for each participant.

Born in Germany and based in New York, Lothar Osterburg started as a master printer at Crown Point Press in San Francisco, and has been running his own photogravure and etching workshop in New York City and Brooklyn since 1994, where he collaborates with many renowned artists and photographers. He has been teaching workshops around the country and is currently visiting professor at Bard College and Cooper Union in New York. Three times a MacDowell Colony Fellow, his work has been shown extensively around the USA, as well as Europe and Japan. He is currently represented by Lesley Heller Workspace in New York City.

Book arts hold an important place in the contemporary art world. This workshop will focus on traditional bookmaking techniques to discover modern applications for your printmaking efforts. The history of books will be briefly discussed and explored through images and samples to expand your creative possibilities. You will learn the basics of four different bookmaking techniques: pamphlet, accordion, Japanese and Coptic binding. Incorporating cutting, pasting, measuring, and sewing, these bookbinding methods are also very useful for collage, assemblage, and installations. Tips and hints will be provided to improve your hand skills. You are encouraged to bring your current works to discuss and get advice.
