Workshop details:
Color could be a challenge for
many artists. Joseph Albers made major advances in color theory, but his
explanations are often difficult to understand and to apply to an individual
aesthetic. This workshop is focused on demystifying color. It will introduce
the basic principles by which all color behave and explore methods for
controlling it. You will discover coloristic solutions to conceptual problems and
apply them to color problems in your own. We will use hands-on color mixing and
printing to develop and control a unique color palette.
Phil Sanders is a New
York based Collaborative Master Printer who has
been working with hundreds of artists in fine art print workshops around the
world. He is the Director/Master Printer of Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop,
NYC and Director/ Senior Curator of the exhibition space Blackburn
20|20. Phil has taught printmaking at Stanford
University, San
Francisco State University,
and the Penland School of Crafts, and conducted lectures and curated
exhibitions at national and international academic and cultural institutions. In
2009 he founded PS Marlowe to support the positive development of culture
through the publication of fine art projects and artistic consultation for
galleries, foundations, artists and collectors. Recent exhibitions include a
solo exhibition at Cornell University,
and many group exhibitions including Frans
Masereel Center,
BE; David Krut Projects, NYC;and IPCNY, NY.

Workshop description:
A collagraph is a print made from a collage of various
materials glued together on inexpensive, readily available materials, such as cardboard,
wooden board, or plexiglass. This playful method is a perfect way to explore
printmaking, giving you many opportunities to experiment with different
processes and create plates using various mediums, fabric, sand, and found
objects. The process is additive and does not use acid or strong solvents to
make prints. Basic relief, intaglio, and emboss
printing techniques will be demonstrated on an etching press. You will make plates using different techniques and print them in layers, one print on top of another. Through
this process, you will learn to work with depth and with color
combination. Many
tips and hints for printing your collagraphs will be provided. See how your plate translates into
dimensional prints and discover your own collagraph methods.
Yasuyo Tanaka studied fashion design, filmmaking and
photography in Tokyo, and
printmaking at the Art Students League of New York. She is involved in bookbinding and papermaking.
Yasuyo has worked as a book conservation technician at the libraries of New
York Botanical Gardens, Union Theological Seminary, and with independent
artists. She has taught workshops, given lectures, and exhibited her work at
Vilnius Graphic Arts Center in Lithuania,
Poznan Academy of Fine Arts in Poland,
Tochigi Prefectural
Museum in Japan,
the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, and the National Academy School of
Fine Arts, among other institutions. Yasuyo Tanaka's websiteDOWNLOAD MATERIALS LIST FOR COLLAGRAPH

time. In addition to discovering what white ground is and how to make
it, our instructor will lead you to explore ways of combining this
technique with more conventional etching methods, including hard ground
and soft ground. Use of color with white ground etching will also be
covered.
Douglas Collins,
a painter, award-winning art filmmaker, non-figurative photographer and
printmaker, holds degrees in math and engineering from UC Berkeley and
Columbia. He studied sculpture at Brooklyn Museum Art School and architecture
at Pratt Institute. His earlier printmaking experience began in our very own Manhattan
Graphics Center with Arnold Brooks and Frederick Mershimer. In addition to
